Margetis Maritime was appointed on behalf of our H& M underwriters, to attend a major grounding incident of a handymax bulk carrier occurred in the Sri Lanka territorial waters.
The detailed inspection was carried out from the first day of the vessel’s docking in order to verify the exact damages sustained in way of the vessel’s bottom structure, extending from aft near the rudder all the way to fore peak tank forward.
Our inspection revealed multiple indentations of bottom plates, affecting directly the internal structure of associated webs, girders, and stiffeners causing structural failures of the stiffeners. Most of the elements had failed due to extensive torsional buckling imposed as a result of the grounding impact.
Hands-on monitoring of the repair works in progress such as cropping of damaged bottom plates along with the associate stiffeners, webs, and girders, modification, straightening, and fitting of new plates and structural elements as well as spot and final welding, being carried out.
Analytical recording and calculation of the ongoing steel renewal are being carried out with precision and accuracy.
