New SOLAS Amendments – Modernized GMDSS adopted
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MSC.496(105) (adopted on 28 April 2022) containing amendments to Chapters II-1, III, IV, and V, and the Appendix (Certificates) of the 1974 SOLAS Convention. The Committee agreed that this resolution should become applicable from 1 January 2024 in conjunction with the entry into force of the related SOLAS amendments.
This Resolution contains a complete replacement text of Chapter IV of SOLAS, as well as a relocation of provisions for life-saving appliance communication equipment from Chapter III to Chapter IV.
The circular MSC.1/Circ. 1645 of 16 May 2022 also provides guidance on the recognized MSI and SAR-related information broadcast services and the equipment which should be installed on board ships to meet the requirements of SOLAS chapter IV while enabling the flexibility to incorporate new technologies as they become recognized by the Organization.
