Brief Course Overview

This course will cover the fundamentals of the air emission regulations which are applicable in the shipping industry.

The material will focus on the IMO GHG strategy, the MARPOL Annex VI and the relevant IMO resolutions, including the EEDI, EEXI, as well the SEEMP and CII and possible actions for compliance with the CII.

Reference shall be made to the sets of the EU Fit for 55 package which concern the shipping industry, as well as to the various national air emission regulations.

Course Context

The reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), including carbon emissions from the shipping industry, is one of the primary targets of the IMO. In order to achieve this target, a significant number of new regulations have already come into force, while others are expected in the near future. These new regulations are very wide and have a very significant impact on the shipping industry.

It is essential for the personnel of shipping companies of all levels to gain a broad knowledge of these new regulations and to understand what actions they should take in order to verify that their ships comply timely with the new requirements.

The purpose of this course is to provide the above-mentioned required level of knowledge to the personnel of shipping companies at various levels of hierarchy.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide the attendees with a broad knowledge of the existing international and national air emission regulations which concern the shipping industry, including MARPOL Annex VI and the relevant sets of the EU Fit for 55 packages, as well as various national regulations regarding air emissions.

The attendees shall acquire a solid understanding of the requirements for SOx & NOx compliance, as well as the EEDI, EEXI, CII and the actions which should be taken for compliance with these indices.

Course Content

The course will cover the following areas:

  • MARPOL Annex VI and relevant IMO resolutions.
  • EEDI, EEXI, CII indices.
  • SEEMP Parts “I”, “II” & “III”.
  • Possible actions for CII compliance.
  • SOx & NOx compliance.
  • Sets of Fit for 55 packages, which concern the shipping industry.
  • National regulations for SOx & NOx compliance.
  • Fuel change-over requirements.

George Margelis is an ex-Hellenic Navy engineer officer with extensive expertise which ranges from operation and maintenance of the propulsion plant of naval ships to their docking, an inspection of their structure/hull, overhauling/repair, technical specifications composition, acquisition contracts composition, and handling.

He holds the following degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): A degree in Ocean engineering and a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Between January 2011 and December 2021, he served as the Training Manager and Environmental Compliance Manager of a major shipping company with bulk carriers.

From January 2022 onwards he is the Environmental Consulting Director of Margetis Maritime Consulting.
