New safety alert by Malta’s Marine Safety Investigation Unit regarding reports of several fires onboard vessels involving lithium-ion batteries.
The alert recommends owners and managers of vessels require that procurement of lithium-ion batteries intended for vessel use include safety and technical data on:
- Protection, handling, safe use, safe storage, and safe disposal.
- Fault/failure detection and required actions; and
- Suppressing, extinguishing, and post-fire management.
